The World Congress for Korean Politics and Society is a biennial conference organized by the Korean Political Science Association (KPSA) to make innovative and insightful discussions on Korean politics.

This year’s Congress will be held from August 22(Thu) to August 23(Fri) at Korea University Campus. The Congress will bring together distinguished scholars to Seoul for two days to share their insights into the interrelationship between Korean politics and the politics around the world.

We welcome submissions of papers, full-panel, and round-table proposals for the following sub-themes such as:

• Issues in Research Methodology

• Politics in Western Societies and Its Comparison with Asia

• Korean Politics in Asian Societies

The Asia Research Initiative, the Department of International Relations and European Studies, and the Department of Public Policy at Central European University (Budapest, Hungary) are pleased to announce the conference ‘Political, Social and Economic Polarization in Divided Societies: Korea in a global context.’ The event is hosted by Central European University (CEU) in Budapest and will take place on 2-4 September 2013.

Calls for economic democratization dominated both presidential and general electoral campaigns in South Korea in 2012. Income inequalities, low employment rates among women, uncertain job prospects for the youth, raise questions over the role of the large industrial conglomerates in Korean society, its impact on social and economic relations and more generally their role in the country’s politics. At the same time, the country appears divided along ideological, regional, and generational lines.

The organisers especially welcome papers addressing one or more of the following issues:

-  sources of polarization in the Korean economy and society;

-  politics and business;

-  Korea and the global financial crisis;

-  revisiting the state-led development model;

-  emerging cleavages in Korean society;

-  crisis of the welfare system and new democracies;

-  protest, resistance and activism.

The conference aims to discuss such themes within a comparative and interdisciplinary environment. The organizers plan to publish selected papers as a special issue of a journal or as an edited volume.

The event seeks to increase the awareness of the importance of Korea and Korean Studies in Central and Eastern Europe and beyond. The areas covered in the conference range from the humanities to the social sciences. Pre-organized panel submissions are strongly encouraged.

Submission of Proposals

Proposals should be submitted via e-mail to koreaconf@gmail.com (as an attachment in MS Word, RTF or PDF format). Please include:

The Faculty of Humanities at Leiden University invites applications for three PhD fellowships, as part of a project entitled ‘Garbage Matters: A Comparative History of Waste in East Asia’. The fellowships will be for four full-time years, starting September 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter.

‘Garbage Matters’ will examine household garbage in contemporary East Asia, and explore the historical shifts behind the transformation of practices related to the ‘production’ and disposal of waste since the Second World War. A comparative analysis, applied at two levels – intra-regional (between China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan) and global (East Asia versus Europe) – forms the overarching framework of the project. The point of departure is the premise that garbage is not simply a ‘matter of waste’, but a social phenomenon reflecting modes of production and consumption, and dominant social values in a particular cultural setting.

Working closely with Prof. Cwiertka and other senior academics, the PhD students will focus on Japan (sub-project A), South Korea (B) and Taiwan (C), respectively. They will map contemporary waste management policies and practices and identify distinctive features in their historical development in each society under scrutiny.

A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree, especially a Ph.D., in political science, history, political economy, or a related discipline, is preferred. The successful candidate will have either a minimum of 10 years of considerable government experience working on issues related to Korea, or a proven record of book publication and publication in professional or academic journals and newspapers. Professional experience in Korea and preferably a period of residence, as well as Korean language skills, are highly preferred.

The Senior Fellow must be motivated yet flexible, diplomatic, creative, trustworthy, a good team player, and must be able to work in a fast-paced environment.

Central European University, Budapest, Hungary, 2nd-4th September 2013

-  sources of polarization in the Korean economy and society;
-  politics and business;
-  Korea and the global financial crisis;
-  revisiting the state-led development model;
-  emerging cleavages in Korean society;
-  crisis of the welfare system and new democracies;
-  protest, resistance and activism.

The conference aims to discuss such themes within a comparative and interdisciplinary environment. The organisers plan to publish selected papers as a special issue of a journal or as an edited volume.

The event seeks to increase the awareness of the importance of Korea and Korean Studies in Central and Eastern Europe and beyond. The areas covered in the conference range from the humanities to the social sciences. Pre-organised panel submissions are strongly encouraged.

Submission of Proposals

Proposals should be submitted via e-mail to koreaconf@gmail.com (as an attachment in MS Word, RTF or PDF format). Please include:
1)      Name
2)      Institutional affiliation
3)      Title/position
4)      E-mail address
5)      A one-page CV
6) Title of Paper (maximum 20 words)
7) Abstract of Paper (maximum 350 words)

The working language of the conference is English.
The deadline for submitting abstracts is 30th April 2013. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their submission by 31st May.
Full details of the program, registration and accommodation arrangements will be available by 30th June.
For all enquiries contact Dr. Youngmi Kim (Department of Public Policy/ International Relations and European Studies, CEU) or Eszter Fugedi at koreaconf@gmail.com.

The event is supported by the Korea Foundation and is organised within the framework of the Global E-school in Eurasia in 2012, a project aimed at developing a multi-university and multi-platform online real-time curriculum in Korean Studies. Central European University is the first European university to host a Global E-School, which brings together – alongside CEU, ELTE in Budapest (Hungary), the University of Vienna (Austria), the University of Paris Diderot, La Rochelle (France), the University of Bologna (Italy), University of Turku, Aalto University (Finland), the Middle East Technical University in Ankara (Turkey), the Tajik State University of Commerce in Dushanbe (Tajikistan), the American University of Central Asia, International University of Central Asia in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), Eurasian National University (Kazakhstan) and Petrozavodsk State University (Russia).

offers Anglo-Korean Society Post-Graduate Bursary (Academic Session 2013-2014)

The Anglo-Korean Society through the Bursary Committee of the British Association for Korean Studies is offering one or more £750 bursaries on a competitive basis to post-graduate students.

The Anglo-Korean Society was founded in 1956 to foster friendship between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Korea. By providing opportunities for contacts between British nationals and Koreans residing in or visiting Britain, the Society seeks to bring together everyone in the UK who has an interest in Korean matters, and to act as a forum for social and cultural exchange in an environment of friendship and understanding.

Details of the Anglo-Korean Society Post-Graduate Bursary Programme are as follows:

1) the bursary is open to students of any nationality who are registered to do a post-graduate degree at a British university.

2) the term ‘post-graduate’ includes taught and research degrees.

3) the programme of study or research must be largely if not wholly focussed on Korea, past or present.

4) preference will be given to programmes of study or research in the area of the humanities or social sciences broadly defined, although other areas could be given consideration in exceptional circumstances.

5) preference will be given to students whose programme of study or research includes the study of and/or the use of the Korean language.

6) there is no restriction on how the bursary will be used by the student.

7) at the end of the academic session in which the bursary is received, the recipient will write a brief letter describing how the bursary furthered the recipient’s studies. This should be addressed to the Anglo-Korean Society and sent to the chairman of the Bursary Committee of the British Association for Korean Studies.

8) the assistance of the Anglo-Korean Society should be mentioned in any work which results from the period of research supported by the AKS Post-Graduate Bursary.

Interested students should apply by doing the following:

1) complete an application form.

2) obtain two (2) letters of recommendation from tutors or lecturers.

The application and recommendation forms may be obtained from the chairman of the Bursary Committee at the address shown below. Each letter of recommendation should be placed by the recommender in a separate, sealed envelope with the signature of the recommender written across the fold. Completed applications should be posted to:
