The Korea Foundation offers Postdoctoral Fellowships in 2014-15

Outline of the Program

This fellowship is awarded to international scholars with a recent PhD on a Korea-related topic to financially assist them in their further research.

Eligible Applicants

  • – International Korean Studies researchers with a recent PhD in the humanities or social science fields, on a Korea-related topic, who have not been awarded a faculty position in a university;
  • – Persons with a PhD in hand at the time of the start of the fellowship period and whose PhD degree was awarded no longer than 5 years ago;
  • – Only those Korean nationals who are permanent residents of a foreign country are eligible to apply for the postdoctoral fellowship.

Grant Period

12 months (one academic year based on the respective institution’s academic calendar)

Affiliated Institutions

  • – Postdoctoral fellowsreceiving research stipends under this program must conduct research at a major overseas university offering a Korean Studies program and having a Korean Studies faculty team and library collection (excluding the university from which the fellow obtained his/her PhD degree).
  • – Postdoctoral fellows’ affiliated institutionsare responsible for providing them with office space, library access, and the necessary practical and administrative assistance to facilitate their academic exchanges with the faculty team and their research activities.
  • ※ Those who wish to conduct their research in an institution located in Korea are not eligible for this Fellowship. Please refer to “Fellowship for Field Research.”

Application Procedure

  • – Before applying for the postdoctoral fellowship, applicants must choose up to three institutions (research institutes or universities) at which they would like to conduct research and send them a request for a postdoctoral research stay. A copy of this request must be attached to the application package submitted to the foundation.
  • – Institutions receiving a request for a research stay from a postdoctoral fellow must notify him/her and the foundation of their decision by the application deadline.

Application Materials

  • – A completed application form (a standard application form is available for download)
  • – A copy of the request (s) made to an affiliatedinstitution for a research stay;
  • – Curriculum vitae (including information about education {academic degrees, field of study and the title of the thesis or dissertation and dates of award}, professional experience, fellowships and grants received in the past, and a list of research accomplishments and publications);)
  • – 3 letters of reference (a standard letter of reference form is available for download): Letters of reference from three persons in a position to academically evaluate the applicant and his/her research proposal, such as his/her dissertation supervisor, professors or fellow researchers – one of whom must be the applicant’s PhD dissertation supervisor.
  • – Research proposal (free-style essay): A five-page proposal containing the following elements:
    • – Detailed explanations of the planned research project including its goals;
    • – Area of research and significance of the research project for Korean Studies;
    • – Description of the chosen research methods and materials;
    • – Description of the progress made thus far and the extent of progress planned during the fellowship period; and
    • – Reasons why the research project must be conducted in the affiliatedinstitution chosen by the applicant;
  • – PhD dissertation: Dissertation abstract, table of contents, chapter summaries, sample chapter, and publication plan.
  • – One copy of the PhD diploma
  • – Graduate school transcripts

Responsibilities of Fellowship Recipients

  • – Full-time research: Fellowship recipients must devote the fellowship period to rewriting their PhD dissertation. They are, however, allowed to teach in the affiliatedinstitution to the extent that this does not interfere with the progress of their research (one course per term).
  • – Participation in academic activities at the affiliatedinstitution: Postdoctoral fellowship recipients are required to participate in academic activities at the host institution during their research stay.
  • – Publication of the PhD dissertation: Postdoctoral fellowship recipients must revise their doctoral dissertation during the fellowship period and publish it as a book or as a research paper within five years of the end of the fellowship period.

Important Reminders

  • – Prohibition of Concurrent Grants: Holding other grants from the foundation or other sources concurrently with this fellowship is not allowed. Applicants who receive notification of an award or grant from another source or institution must immediately inform the foundation thereof.
  • – Prohibition of Concurrent Fellowships: Postdoctoral fellowship recipients are not allowed to concurrently hold another fellowship. Furthermore, postdoctoral fellowship recipients may not receive publication subsidies from the foundation for research outcomes deriving from the same project for which the fellowship was originally awarded.
